About Your First Visit

Will I be treated in a gym with other people around?

No. You will always be treated in a comfortable and private treatment space and will never need to worry about working in a crowded therapy gym with other patients and practitioners.

What should I wear?

Comfortable clothing is the best option!

Will I undress during my visit?

Yes, but not right away! When you arrive, you will stay fully dressed throughout the intake while we talk and get to know each other. When we begin the assessment, you will stay fully clothed while we check your posture and general movement. To perform an external and/or internal exam, Dr. Hersh will leave the room and have you undress fully from the waist down (no need to take your socks off). You will lie on a comfortable treatment table (with soft linens, no crinkly paper sticking to you) fully covered by a sheet.

What is a physical therapy internal exam like?

Dr. Hersh is trained to perform both external and internal examination and treatment.

Before you are even on the treatment table, the entire process will be explained with the use of a pelvic model to make sure you are comfortable, know what to expect and there are no surprises.

To perform an external and/or internal exam, you will be lying on a comfortable treatment table, undressed from the waist down and fully covered by a sheet. The exam is performed with 1 gloved examining finger and lubricant. There are no stirrups and no speculum is used. Patients often comment that it was “so much easier than expected” and “it’s not like being examined by the OBGYN or midwife.”

If a patient is unable to tolerate internal examination and/or treatment or feels uncomfortable having it performed, this is something that should be discussed during your visit.

Internal exams provide valuable information that can’t be obtained externally, but each patient is treated as an individual to best meet their needs and circumstance.

What happens if I have my period the day of my visit?

Come anyway! Some patients are not comfortable doing internal examination or treatment during menstruation even though it is “OK” to do so (and Dr. Hersh is comfortable doing this if the patient is). Fortunately, there are many other things we can assess and work on and do to help you if you make the choice to defer internal examination or treatment.  There is no need to worry or cancel your session.
